12/2/07  We all know what a fantastic start to 2007 it has been for Fernando, I didn't want to jinx anything by starting to write about it... I was so very tempted after every match at the Aussie Open, and then it was heading into Davis Cup.. so thought It was better to keep my website silent until all these things were in the distance.. Unfortunately the Davis Cup at the weekend went the way of the current Davis Cup Champions Russia.. but Well fought by Fernando and Nico to try and take it Chile's way.  To get to that all important 5th live rubber must have meant so much pressure.. but as I said it wasn't to be.
I will work my way through the rankings, schedule and results pages tonight and hopefully get all things back to normal.. I know it looks like an exceptionally long break that I haven't updated for, but in reality its not that many tournaments that Fernando has played, so he has made it slightly easier for me..
I am heading to the States myself in a couple of days, but will update along the way.. I will be in Indian Wells and Miami for the Masters series events.. armed and ready with my camera.. so be prepared for lots of photos on my return.. and hopefully some good results from Fernando.. Indian wells wasn't the greatest for him last year to say the least, but lets hope that Top 5 ranking will spur him on to do things differently this time around.. I'm really looking forward to seeing him again, it seems ages. I guess due to Fernando's success at the Aussie open it has brought alot more traffic to the site.. so Hello to anyone new.. glad to have you around.

22/12/06  I would like to apologise to everyone who keeps checking in with the site and finds that it still hasn't been updated.  It has all been too hectic for me lately and the site has suffered. I will make a big effort to update the site over Christmas time, so that I am ready for the start of the 2007 Season.  I'm not sure if Fernando is playing the Kooyong Classic before the Aussie Open or not, there seems to have been alot of debate about it, but from the tournament site it seems the line up is, Federer, Haas, Safin, Nalbandian, Roddick, Ljubicic, Stepanek, Murray.  Anyway, Merry Christmas to you all.. and a very happy new year. I still have photos to add to the site from my trip to the Paris Masters and also some that Tammy took in the summer, so keep dropping by to have a look.  Many Thanks ~ Jules.

5/9/06  Sorry for the lack of updates.. Technical problems again this end.  Well Fernando's run at the US Open ended as of Monday, so I would imagine he would be enjoying some days off now back at home in Chile.  The rain stopped the doubles being resumed in the third set on Saturday.. so that was put into Sunday's schedule along with his third round singles match.  The singles was played on the Grandstand court, 3rd match of the day and I actually got to see the whole match for once here.. (thats the beauty of him playing someone British).  It was a real rollercoaster ride, and I was shouting at the TV on several occasions.. But in the end Murray won through in 5 sets, 6-3,3-6,2-6,6-3,6-2.  I don't know if Fernando and Mardy had to even go on court on Sunday evening, or whether the match was called off before (this would be my guess) as they progressed through to the 2nd round with a retirement on the Grosjean/Tursunov team.  The next round doubles was against Knowles/Nestor no.3 seeds.  Although the first set went to a tie break, Knowles/Nestor won through 7-5, and then went on to take the second set 6 games to 3.  So another US Open passes by, being one of the wettest I would think.. I certainly don't remember New York having this much rain over the tennis in the years I have been watching tennis..  So we wish Fernando a nice rest.. and look forward to seeing him back out there very soon.

2/9/06  I had hoped that I could have stayed awake long enough to see the conclusion of Fernando's doubles match last night, but I couldn't and now I see this morning that it is on the schedule as, to finish today.  So Fernando doesn't get a full day off today, but the match will resume on Court 4, first match, but not starting until 1pm. As it stands it's one set all, 3-6,6-2 and 2-1, but I don't know if that is going with serve or not.. couldn't find those stats on the US Open site.. but I guess I'll know at 6pm my time when the match starts!  As far as the singles goes in New York, it was another good win for Fernando over Jan Hajek 6-4,6-4,6-2.  He will now face British No 1 Andy Murray in round 3, who is now sitting at 19 in the rankings and having a pretty good year all round.  They have met once before in the quarter finals of Basel and Fernando won 6-1 in the final set.  Both guys have had a good run on the hard courts on the way into this tournament, so I think it will be an interesting match up, which will be played tomorrow. This one for sure will be televised for me, being in the UK, but then unlike the rest of the country I'll be cheering for the man from Chile!! (can I help it if my favorite players don't come from the UK!!).  Ok, fingers crossed for a doubles win later today, and I'll be back with the order of play for tomorrow.

1/9/06  A busy day for Fernando today in Flushing Meadows, first up his singles match against Jan Hajek on court 10 at 11am, as I said previously they haven't met before, he currently stands at 83 in the rankings, I wonder if Fernando got out there to see any of his first round match to see how he plays?  Later on in the afternoon he has his first round doubles with Mardy, against Grosjean/Tursunov. Both Mardy Fish and Seb Grosjean lost yesterday in singles, and Fernando and Dmitry both have to play their second round singles today before the doubles.. so its fairly even there.  As always best of luck Fernando.

30/8/06  At least the rain seems to be holding off in New York today.. and Fernando wasted no time in getting his first round win in, he beat Jiri Vanek 6-2,6-3,6-2.  Due to the court change I didn't get to see this match televised in the UK, but I don't know if it was televised anywhere else in the world.  His next round oppenent is yet to be decided but it will be another player from the Czech Republic, either Jan Hajek or Lukas Dlouhy. Either way Fernando hasn't played either of these guys before at a tour event.  Will be back with more details when I know them.. Well played Fernando today.

30/8/06  Due to an almost complete wash out yesterday in New York, the the day session and night session, Fernando didn't get to play and has had a court change on the schedule for today, He now will play on court 7, 1st match of the day with an 11am start time.  Looking at the forcast for today in NYC it looks to be cloudy but not much rain forcast (that all seems to be saved up for Friday and Saturday..) So lets hope they get all their first round matches completed today.

29/8/06  So Fernando starts his US Open today.. His match is scheduled out on Court 10 (a televised court) 4th match of the day after a womens singles, mens singles and another womens singles.  The doubles draw is out, and Fernando is playing this event with Mardy Fish as was updated on his official site.  They will play Sebastian Grosjean and Dmitry Tursunov in the first round, these two have only paired once before, which was in Houston 2005.   I'll be back later with results after hopefully being able to watch the match.

27/8/06  Fernando will face Jiri Vanek in the first round at the US Open this week.  These two have never met before, so a bit of info on his opponent, he currently stands at No.100 in the rankings, he is 28 and a right hander from the Czech Republic.  He has reached the QF of 3 ATP events so far in 2006, and 3 challenger semi finals.  The schedule is out for Monday,  Fernando isn't on it.. So its a Tuesday or Wednesday start for our man.  Lets hope Fernando is having fun in NYC and it will be a successful fortnight for him.

25/8/06  The US Open draw is out, Fernando is seeded 10 for this last Grand slam of the year and he will face a qualifier in the first round.  I'm not sure what day they will place the qualifiers names in the draw, but I will keep an eye on it and as soon as I see it, I'll add it in here.  I also have some photos from Tammy from Cincy to add over the weekend, and hope to get some from Alan from his trip to New York too.

20/8/06  Andy Roddick is becoming a pain for Fernando to play!! So I was waiting to update the site until I had watched the match, but I didn't realise it was going to be so late in the day.. Both guys played great tennis in parts of the match, but at the end of the day it seemed to be Andy's ability to knock down an ace when he really needs to, that was the major problem.  It could have easily gone to 3 sets, as it was all very even in the second set, until Fernando was serving at 4-4, and gave Roddick the game on a double fault, and got a warning for smashing his racquet.. Its so ridiculous that he shows his frustration and passion for the game by smashing his own racquet and gets a warning.. I really think they should do something about this rule.. We need personality in the game, in whatever form and at that crucial point in the match, he had every right to smash it.  Anyway.. that seeled Fernando's fate in the match and he lost 6-3,6-3.  So now its a week off to prepare for the US Open and get rested up as it's been a busy couple of weeks.  I should have new photos from Cincinnati this week thanks to Tammy being there armed with her camera.. check back later in the week to see them.

19/8/06  Another comprehensive win for Fernando last night, serving 5 aces on his way to winning 6-2,6-4 over David Ferrer.  Tonight he will face Andy Roddick for the 8th time in his career, with Roddick leading the head to head 5-2. But as far as matches on hard courts are concerned its 2-2.  It couldn't be closer with their rankings standing at 12 and 13 this week.  It's Fernando's first visit back to the semis in Cincinnati since 2002.. so lets hope this will be his first visit to the final if he can get through tonights match.  It's the big night session match starting at 7pm local time.. If I can make it, I'll be staying up to watch the scoreboard.. Hopefully will get the match in full tomorrow, but not quite the same when I will already know the result.. Best of luck Fernando..

18/8/06  Another close match between Fernando and Stan Wawrinka, although Fernando got off to a good start with an early break of serve, the first set ended up with a tie break, but going Fernando's way.  Final match score 7-6(2),7-5.  I had to wait until this morning in the UK to find out who his next round opponent was as the match was played late, but Ferrer won in the end 7-5,6-4 over Baghdatis.  So it will be the 6th career meeting between Fernando and David Ferrer, with Fernando leading the head to head 3-2.  Its funny as they met 3 times in 2003 and then not at all in 04/05 and this will be the 3rd meeting in 2006.  Anyway.. the last meeting was at Wimbledon on a very hot day which I nearly passed out watching that five setter! but I hope this one today will go the other way as it was heartbreaking to lose by a single break in the 5th set.  These two seem to be pretty good mates too. Best of luck again today Fernando.

17/8/06  It looked like a close match between Mardy and Fernando yesterday with Fernando winning 7-5,7-5 in the end.  The third round, when looking at the draw, you would have expected Fernando to meet No.3 seed David Nalbandian, but he got beaten yesterday by Stanislas Wawrinka, leaving him to be Fernando's next round opponent.  This is the third meeting this year, both have been in a Masters series event, Miami and Rome, and Fernando has won both matches, which has to leave him feeling quite positive moving into this match.. But nothing is that simple in tennis, as I'm sure you all know.. I have to say Congrats to Andy Murray, hats off for beating Roger Federer yesterday...  As far as the doubles goes, well I'm  not really sure what is going on.  According to the draw sheet, Ivan had to pull out due to Hyperthermia, so an alternate pair were put in their place in the draw before the match was due to be played yesterday.. but he appers to still be in the singles draw... Hmmmm.  Oh well, I guess its good for Fernando to have the extra energy for this week..  The singles match today is to be played on the Grandstand Court, 3rd match of the day.. about 3 pm local time.  Best of luck Fernando

16/8/06 Having been away from my computer for a few days there is always so much to catch up on.  So as I'm sure you are all know by now, Roger Federer claimed title No.7 of 2006 on Sunday in Toronto against Richard Gasquet. So that meaning that the semi final that was played on Saturday night against Fernando went Rogers way yet again, the final score being 6-1,5-7,6-3 in one hour and 44 mins.  Fernando's performance this week in Toronto takes him up 3 places in the rankings to No.13.
Moving on to Cincinnati now, seeded 13 this week he has drawn Nicolas Massu in round 1, which was played last night under the lights in Cincy.  Their head to head before the match stood at 2-1 in Fernando's favour. The last time they met was in Vina Del Mar this year which was the only time Nico had beaten him.  All three previous meetings had been on clay, but Fernando came through with a comfortable win 6-4,6-4.  In the next round he will face American WC Mardy Fish, the only time they have played was at the Olympics in 2004 which Mardy won.  This match is scheduled for Grandstand court 3rd match of the day after an 11 am start.  Fernandos postponed doubles match from Monday night will also be played today.  This is a first round match and again this week he is playing with Ivan Ljubicic, their opponents are Nieminen/Lindstedt, match scheduled for court 3, 5th match.
